Fort Denison, Sydney Harbour, New South Wales, Australia

Fort Denison is a fortified island in the middle of Sydney Harbour, built between 1841 and 1857 as a defence against a feared Russian invasion during the Crimean war. The fort's guns have never been fired in anger but the fort did suffer minor damage from shells fired from Japanese midget submarines during the 2nd World War

It's original Aboriginal name of Mat-te-wan-ye was changed to Rock Island after the first English fleet arrived in 1788 but was better known as Pinchgut probably due to the short rations issued to prisoners who were interned there. The fort then took its current name from Sir William Thomas Denison, the Governor of New South Wales from 1855 to 1861, when it was completed in 1857.
